Summer Softball week 2: Two Fields, One Day

Welcome to the week 2 edition of the newsletter.

We started the Queensbridge portion of the schedule last weekend with four games on each field. Thankfully we had some quick games at Whitey, and finished before the rain. Here’s a recap of last weekend’s action:

Whitey Ford field

Upper Deckers 14-Pitchslap 2

This game was close up until the fourth inning, when the Upper Deckers put up 11 runs in the late frames to win their first game of the summer season. A big thanks to Kris and Jon for umping the game. The Upper Deckers take on the Astros next week in what has become one of Astoria Socials biggest rivalries.

I’d Hit That 10-Gold Label 9

That’s now two wins in a row for I’d Hit That, as they defeated both the Upper Deckers and the Gold Label in consecutive weeks. The scorebook shows that I’d Hit That scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-4 lead. They withstood a late game charge by the Gold Label to hold on for a 10-9 win.

Michele M had this to say after the win:

‘Close game, Gold Label always keeps us on our toes… but we were able to pull together as a team and huge solo homer from Vinny to secure one more run mid game …which eventually got us this W! β€˜

Thanks to the team of Derek and Bauer for umpiring.

Astros 8-Got the Runs 4

How often do we see this write-up:

(Insert team name) was leading for basically the entire game, until the (6th or 7th inning) when the Astros took advantage of a few miscues and won the game after (Nick/Julio/Matt) took a (insert pitcher name) pitch deep to lead the comeback.

It happened again Saturday. The Astros put up five runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Got the Runs by a score of 8-4.

Bad News Beers 6-Beer View Mirrors 2

Kenny Chung pitched a gem last weekend, leading the charge as the Bad News Beers held the BVM scoreless over the final six frames for the win. The game was highlighted by the extremely rare two pitch inning. (One auto out, two fly ball outs)

Queensbridge Park

Booze on First 21-JTGT 8

This one was over before it began. Booze played one of their best games this past weekend in throttling the newly named JTGT in the second game of the day at Queensbridge.

Smiles for miles after a sound victory. 🍻🍻[/[/[/[/[/[/[/[/[/[/[/[/[/[/[/[/[/[/

Summer 2018 kickball MVP John Shaw returned to the mound and kept JTGT off the board for most of the game. Booze continues to improve, as all their balls found holes and they played solid defense for all seven innings.

Spear Throwers 16- Soft Balls 14

My how the Soft Balls continue to play well. They lead for most of the game against one of the league’s best teams. A 3 run home run by Brett of the Soft Balls gave them a 5 run lead after two and a half innings. The Spears put up five in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good, including a second home run by Cole. Four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth innings would go on to be crucial, as the Soft Balls scored four of their own in the top of the seventh. (And they had the tying runs on base as the final out was recorded) The last out was recorded at third base in this thriller. The Spears improve to 2-0.

Outkasts 16- SOPs 2

The Outkasts still have not lost a regular season game in 2018. They scored 16 over six frames.

Outkasts putting up some social points!

Both teams had a nice post game showing at Katch after the game. 🍻🍻

Recess Renegades 7- Brew Crew 1

The Renegades scored three runs in the fifth and seventh to win their first game of the season this past weekend.

All games played are reflected in the standings.

Social Points Update:

Megan continues to tabulate the social points each week. Here is the week 2 update:

Promotion

This Saturday night marks the return of the U2 cover band Under a Blood Red Sky at the Local Bar. They start their 15+ song set at 10pm. Admission is free. The band includes Wednesday night trivia bartender (and fellow KISS fan) Chris Conte. A bunch of Astoria Social softball players have said they will be in attendance. When I mentioned this to three different people, they all asked “oh wow I hope Sweetest Thing is on the setlist. Is it?” I can assure you that it is. And “40” better be.

Thanks for reading everyone!
