Both JTFT and the Isotopes celebrating after the 2015 Spring Championship Game

Both JTFT and the Isotopes celebrating after the 2015 Spring Championship Game

On June 27th, we crowned our first ever Astoria Social Softball champions. After ten games of competition, our playoff matchups were as follows:

(4) Astoria Isotopes vs (1) Pretzels

(3) Pitchslap vs (2) JTFT

The action began at 1pm, with the regular season champions the Pretzels taking on the fourth seed the Astoria Isotopes. The Isotopes jumped out to an early lead, behind some timely hitting in the first few innings. With a lead as high as 12 runs, it became the Isotopes game to lose. During the regular season, the Pretzels only lost one game (and in walk-off fashion against JTFT in an early season Monday night game) and looked poised to make a comeback. After cutting the lead to six runs in the seventh inning, the Pretzels appeared ready to come from behind once again. However, the lead was too much to overcome, and the Isotopes held on for the upset 19-13.

In our second game, it was a hungry Pitchslap team that went on the early offensive, behind a brigade of singles that resulted in a 6 run lead heading into the 4th inning. However, the top of the fourth inning yielded a hard collision at home plate, waking up the JTFT offense. They would go on to score an unanswered 10 runs, winning comfortably by 7 runs, and heading to the title game to face the Astoria Isotopes.

This season, we have been very fortunate with the weather. There were no games postponed due to rain and weather during the regular season. At first pitch, it appeared our string of consecutive games played was in jeopardy. Almost on cue with the first pitch, the rain began to fall, creating an element of excitement and distraction for two teams that have already played in high pressure games earlier in the day. It was 3-3 after two innings when the JTFT squad put up a 6 run inning, taking the lead and never looking back. They would go on to win by 11 runs. Moments after the final batter, both teams would line up and congratulate each other on some quality, fun-filled weekends at Whitey Ford Field. Shortly thereafter, both teams would head to the Strand for some post-game fun! It was a special day after a fantastic first season! Congratulations to our Spring 2015 Champions, JTFT!!!!
