Week 8 Recaps

Let’s start off by giving some love to the New World Outkasts. They were the sole undefeated team this season, finishing 7-0 and securing the top overall seed in the upcoming playoffs. Brian and Melinda jokingly told me they get no newsletter love. They defeated Just the Foul Tip on Saturday at Queensbridge by the score of 7-1.

The team is peaking at the right time. Joe Lad is hitting as well as anyone. And Jason Lui seems to show up and do damage against JTFT each week. In fact, for his home run and newsletter love the higher ups in the Outkast front office decided to bat him last. Ha! Let’s also give him some love for going from Queensbridge in the AM, to Whitey to umpire, back to Queensbridge to play with the Outkast, and back to Whitey to umpire the 6:45. And then he played with the Brew Crew on Sunday…

One hour, 59 minutes

Nearly two Ric Flair matches in length, the Brew Crew defeated the Designated Drinkers by the score of 19-11 in the longest seven inning game of the year. The win gives the Brew Crew a 4-3 record on the season. A big shout out to Erica and Andrew for doing a great job captaining the ‘Crew this season-they played some great softball this season! They take on the aforementioned JTFT in the 1:45 game at Whitey this Saturday.

Heating Up

The weather and the Dutches bats. They scored 11 runs against Got the Runs on Saturday, taking home the win after doing all their damage in the middle innings. Matt Serino got the offense going with a three run Queensbridge Home Run. The final: 11-7 Grape Dutches. They face the Beer View Mirrors next Sunday at 12:45.

Happy Father’s Day

I would like to give a big shoutout to all the great dads in the league-hope you all had a great day with your families and loved ones. We got a great photo of the Sons of Pitche’s post game (which you can find on the Astoria Social Instagram page) Before posing for the photo, they defeated the much improved Soft Balls by the score of 8-4. The win secures the #4 seed for the SOPs, who will face the dangerous Astoria Astros in three weeks in the final weekend of the playoffs.

Also, a great day for Jeremy Rubenstein. He hit the ball extremely well and then subbed for the Designated Drinkers, and continued his hot hitting. We also found out he is on an upcoming episode of Cash Cab! Can’t wait to see that!

Beer View Mirrors @ Spear Throwers

“We faced a very strong Beer View Mirrors team who played an incredible game. I’m very proud of my team and their perseverance despite missing a handful of key players this week. A win seemed unlikely trailing by 5 in the 7th, especially after a Dan Sullivan (swinging) strikeout. (Sorry Dan! <3) Everyone contributed and newcomer/Shrek extraordinaire Jason Sofge came through with a walk off single to cap off a 6 run rally. It’s been a great and very fun undefeated** season. We’re ready to make another championship run in the playoffs!” Jeremy K., Captain Alaskan Spear Throwers

Upper Deckers @ It’d Hit That

“Big W for I’d Hit That this weekend taking over the undefeated Upper Deckers. They are always one of our hardest competitors but I think our team really came together for this match up! We played smart and classy, had tough defense early on. Big shout outs to Ellen playing second base catching everything that came her way… our strong arms and heavy hitters Ryan, Mark, Jason, Rob, Jeremy and our other co-captain Chris. We all played really great and this is just a sneak peak of what we will bring for playoffs this weekend! Bring it on!!” Michele M., Captain I’d Hit That

Booze on First @ Astros

“A very close game that came down to a couple clutch hits by Astros late to take the lead and win. Booze on 1st bats fell asleep after a strong start. The new Booze on 1st hats are looking sharp even in a loss.” Tanner, Captain, Booze on First

Gold Label @ Pitch Slap

“It’s been a tough season for Pitch Slap, but we think we’ve got a good enough squad to make some noise in the playoffs next week.” Brian P., Captain Pitch Slap
